Kosmos comes up dry off Ghana

Dallas-based Kosmos Energy has found nothing but water in the reservoirs of the Makore-1 exploration well on the West Cape Three Points Block, off the Republic of Ghana.

The well was drilled to total depth of 3876 metres, in a water depth of 1409 metres, to explore a stratigraphic trap in a Turonian-age fan system.

Kosmos said the well encountered 37 metres of good-quality Campanian-age sandstone reservoirs and 46 meters of Turonian-age sandstone reservoirs but were all found to be water bearing.

The semi-submersible Atwood Hunter will remain on the block to drill the Akasa-1 exploration well, which Kosmos said was expected to be spudded “shortly”.

Kosmos is operator of the West Cape Three Points Block and holds a 30.875% interest along with Anadarko Petroleum with 30.875%, Tullow Oil on 22.896%, EO Group holding a 3.5% stake, Sabre Oil & Gas with 1.854% and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation with a 10% carried interest.
