Bomb explosion rocks UN building in Abuja, 16 dead

26 August, 2011, Sweetcrude, Abuja – The UN building in Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital was on Friday rocked by a bomb explosion, leaving at least 16b people dead and dozens wounded.

The bomb blast occurred at about 10.30 am when a suspected suicide bomber drove an SUV into the building.

Eyewitness said the saw bodies being loaded into ambulance vehicles and taken to the National Hospital in Abuja.

The huge explosion took out a part of the 1st and 2nd floors of the building located in the diplomatic area, Area 1, Garki, Abuja.

Rescue personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency, the Red Cross and police, were seen pulling victims out of the rubbles.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but security sources fingered the radical Islamist sect Boko Haram.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mrs. Viola Viola President Goodluck Jonathan was very much worried about the icident and described the bombing as an attack on the global community.

Boko Haram has been carrying out bombing campaigns against Nigeria, demanding a wider application of the sharia Islamic law in the country.

The group claimed responsibility for the bombing of the headquarters of Nigeria Police in Abuja which killed 11 people last June.
