Shell, Oyigbo leaders move to prevent crisis over spill

21 October 2011, Sweetcrude, Port Harcourt- The Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and leaders of Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State are working to forestall any crisis as a result of an oil spill in Izuoma-Ndoki community in the area.

Reports said the spill, which occurred on Monday, led to the discharge of crude oil into Imo River. This allegedly affected aquatic lives and farming within the area.

SPDC members of Oyigbo Cluster Development Board, members of Izuoma-Ndoki Community Development Committee and heads of security agencies in the area have visited the spill site in an effot to find a solution to the problem.

Chairman of Oyigbo Cluster Development Board, Dr. Chihoor Nwaogu, said the visit was aimed at identifying the level of damage caused by the spill.

Nwaogu also explained that the visit had afforded them an opportunity to advise youths in the affected area not to engage in violence over the development.

He said, “When something like this happens, there are some layers of investigations. What we are doing now is peripheral investigation to know what actually happened.”
