House of Reps plans full debate on subsidy removal next week

04 January 2012, Sweetcrude, ABUJA – Nigeria’s House of Representatives said, Tuesday, it would embark on an extensive debate on the Federal Government’s removal of the subsidy on fuel when it reconvenes next week.

Hon. Victor Ogene, Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, revealed this, saying the House had noted the decision of the executive arm of government regarding the total removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and the subsequent reaction of a cross section of Nigerians to the decision.

According to him, the House would consider the matter on resumption from its Christmas vacation.

He said: “It is worth repeating here that the House of Representatives has not taken any definite decision on the subsidy matter before it proceeded on recess on December 20, 2011.

“However, the House of Representatives would immediately upon resumption on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, commence exhaustive deliberation and consultation with other stakeholders on the issue,”.

He assured Nigerians that the outcome of the proposed debate would reflect the views of majority of the lawmakers and the aspirations of their constituents.
