Customs officers get ultimatum to vacate PHCN office

05 October 2012, Sweetcrude, LAGOS – THE National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, has given the Nigerian Custom Service, NCS, a seven-day ultimatum to vacate the Central Stores office of Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, facility at Alasia, Oshodi, Lagos

The facility has allegedly been occupied by armed Customs personnel since October 1.

In a statement by the Vice President of NUEE, Lagos/Ogun Zone, Mbang Ntukubes, NUEE claimed the armed Customs personnel were under the directive of the Minister of State for Power, Darius Ishaku, and the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Dere Awosika.

The statement said: “The union observes this development as a misnomer, since the Customs operations and that of PHCN are not in any way related. It is equally disturbing because armed men and civilians are not expected to work together.

“We want to equally reiterate that one of the issues that is lingering between us and the government, for which labour was given assurance that it is being looked into, is the incessant deployment of soldiers to PHCN premises.”
