US rig count falls by four

US Rig-Count-Drops10 August 2013 – The number of rigs drilling for oil and gas fell by four this week for a total of 1778, according to data from Houston-based services giant Baker Hughes.

The oil-directed rig tally fell by three for a total of 1385 and the number of gas-directed rigs was down two on 386.

The Permian basin in West Texas gained big this week, adding seven rigs for a total of 470.

The Eagle Ford in South Texas lost three for a total of 236.

The Bakken oil play in the Williston basin of North Dakota and Montana ticked up one for 182.

In Oklahoma and Kansas, the Mississippian play gained four rigs to total 74.

In the Granite Wash play of the Texas Panhandle and western Oklahoma, there were four fewer rigs running, bringing the total there to 71.

The Marcellus and Haynesville gas plays were both flat on 87 and 42 rigs, respectively. Fayetteville was also flat on 11.

The Barnett gas play lost one for 32.

The DJ-Niobrara basin in Colorado was flat on 51, though state-wide Colorado gained three rigs for a total of 71.

The Utica of Ohio was flat on 37 rigs.

As for the states, California saw the biggest swing, losing four rigs for a total of 38.
