US rig count down 15

Brent steadies24 August 2013, News Wires – The number of rigs drilling for oil and gas fell by 15 this week for a total of 1776, according to data from Houston-based services giant Baker Hughes.

Oil-directed rigs bore the brunt of the loss, shedding 15 for a total of 1382. Gas-directed rigs lost one for 387.

The Permian basin was the big loser this week with eight fewer rigs than the week before, a total of 466.

The Mississippian basin also took a blow, losing four rigs for 70. The Utica lost three rigs for 35. The DJ-Niobrara lost three rigs for 49.

In North Dakota, the Williston basin was flat on 182. A lone bright spot was the Eagle Ford, which added five rigs for 234.

The Marcellus gas play gained one rig for 87. Statewide, California took a big hit, losing five rigs to end up with 37. Colorado lost for for 67.

Very few states gained rigs. Only Texas on two, for a total of 848, and Pennsylvania and Kansas on one apiece to finish with 52 and 26, respectively.
