US rig count stays flat

rig-2102 September 2013, News wires – The count of US rigs drilling for oil and gas remained flat this week at 1776, with oil activity increasing as gas activity decreased.

The tally of units exploring for oil was up by six to 1388, down 31 from a year ago. The count drilling for gas fell by seven to 380, or off 93 from a year ago.

The overall count was down from 118 from last year. The count of rigs in the Gulf of Mexico was at 61, up two from last week and 12 from a year ago.

Several top plays saw the departure of a few rigs, with Texas’ Eagle Ford dropping by three to 231, the Granite Wash by two to 70 and the Marcellus by two to 85.

Accordingly, Texas shed two rigs for a total of 846 and Pennsylvania dropped a pair as well for a total of 50.

Louisiana added two units for a count of 112, while Alaska, California, Oklahoma and Utah all added one each for totals of 14, 38, 170 and 29 respectively. Colorado and Wyoming each lost a rig, summing to 66 and 49 respectively.
