US rig count falls by nine

Oil rigs07 September 2013, News Wires – The number of oil and gas rigs drilling in the US fell by nine this week for a total of 1767, according to data from Houston-based oilfield services giant Baker Hughes.

Oil-directed rigs sunk by 23 for a total of 1365 while gas rigs rose by 14 to total 394. Oil rigs were down 44 on the year and gas rigs were off by 58.

The Permian basin of West Texas accounted for the biggest drop in rigs, shedding nine for a total of 465, off 46 for the year. Statewide, Texas saw eight fewer rigs drilling this week.

The Eagle Ford was flat on 231. The Barnett gas shale saw three additional rigs for a total of 32.

Most major basins were flat for the week. The Williston held strong at 182, the Mississippian was steady on 71, the DJ-Niobrara stayed on 49 and the Granite Wash held at 70.

The Marcellus gas play gained a rig for 86. The Haynesville lost one for 43.The Utica was flat on 35 and is up 14 on the year.California lost three rigs for 35.
