US rig count rises by 12

Oil+rig10 November 2013, News Wires – The number of rigs drilling for oil and gas in the US rose by 12 this week for a total of 1754, according to data from Houston-based oilfield services giant Baker Hughes.

Oil-directed rigs climbed by seven for a total of 1383. The gas-rig count rose by five to total 365.

The Permian basin in West Texas and New Mexico exploded for a gain of 18 rigs, bringing the country-leading rig total there to 469. Texas as a state crushed all others, gaining 13 rigs for a total of 834. New Mexico gained the second most on six for a total of 80.

Few other basins made significant moves. The Barnett in North Texas gained two for 36. The Haynesville shale in Arkansas and Louisiana lost two for a total of 40.

The Mississippian lost a rig for 75; the DJ-Niobrara gained a rig for 51.

The Eagle Ford and Williston basins were flat on 226 and 175, respectively. Marcellus was flat on 85, Utica was flat on 36.

Oklahoma was the big loser among states, shedding four rigs for 172.

Louisiana was up one on 106 and Alaska was down one on nine. All other states were flat.
