09 December 2013, Abuja – The five-member states of the Hydro Power Production Area Development Commission (HYPPADEC) have resolved to hold an emergency meeting soon to press for the inauguration of the board of the the agency by President Goodluck Jonathan.
LEADERSHIP Sunday findings revealed that all the states have submitted the names of their nominees for the commission to the Ministry of Power which has forwarded them to the presidency, but no action has been taken.
It was however observed that the work at the permanent secretariat of the proposed commission on Paikoro Road, Minna, Niger State, has been completed but under lock with no furniture or any office equipment installed.
Considering the long wait for the commission’s take-off, the states have been agitated and would call a technical meeting of the HYPPADEC states made up of secretaries to the affected state governments, it was gathered.
A source told LEADERSHIP Sunday that the states were getting more agitated as they were not sure if provision for the commission’s take-off was contained in the 2014 budget.
It was also gathered that the states have agreed to lobby the legislators from the HYPPADEC states, with a technical committee to work out modalities for realising the goal.
The committee will also lobby the National Assembly to pressure the presidency to see the need for the commission to begin operation three years after its bill was passed.
The coordinating senior special assistant of HYPPADEC, Mallam Mohammed Aliyu Koshe, told LEADERSHIP Sunday that the states were worried over the delay in the take-off of HYPPADEC.
Koshe confirmed that, in consultation with the secretary to the Niger State government, Hon. Saidu Idris Ndako, the meeting of the technical committee would be called to know the next step to be taken on the matter.
