Ethiopia: Solar home system for households

Solar panels11 December 2013, Addis Ababa – Over 390 households in Fogera woreda of North Gondar Zone, Amhara Regional State, have benefited from solar home system during the 2012/13 fiscal year, the woreda water Resource Development Office said. “The system was installed for households in three localities located far from the main electricity grid system,” Rozina Zemene, Office Alternative Energy expert said. She said the provision of solar system helped the zone to reduce deforestation by half. The expert said the office is striving to benefit additional 400 households from solar home system this budget year. Similarly, over 10,000 biogas plants are being built in North Shoa Zone of Oromia Regional State at a cost of over eight million Birr, the Zonal Water Mines & Energy Office said Biogas plants will benefit over 12,000 households in 13 woredas and rural towns, according to Tekalign Belema, the deputy Office head. Some 1,254 households have so far benefited from the bio gas plants which are expected to minimize cutting of trees for fuel. – Addis Fortune
