Spanish explorer Repsol has kicked off drilling of the first exploration well in a Mauritania block, according to partner RWE Dea.

The Ouguiya-1 well is being drilled in Block Ta10 located in the little-explored Taoudeni basin in the desert of central Mauritania where it is targeting pre-Cambrian formations.

RWE Dea’s senior vice president of exploration Werner Schwarzhans said the well is “both challenging from an engineering point as well as being of great interest in geological terms”, with prospects of pre-Cambrian age rarely explored to date.

The probe, being drilled using the rig Saipem 5893, is scheduled for completion by the second quarter of 2014.

Repsol holds a 70% stake as operator of the 14,450 square-kilometre block, with Germany’s RWE Dea holding the remainder.
