12 December 2013, Kigali – The Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority (EWSA) is set to introduce a new mobile payment system as it aims to increase payment efficiency and ease the work payments of its consumers.
The new payment method is set to begin next year targeting the mobile phone users in the country. This new payment scheme comes on top of the recent introduction of new payment systems such as the “pre-payment contract service,” and the “bank payment contract service.”
Lucien Rutaran an expert at EWSA told Rwanda Focus,”the new system is targeting mobile phone users that are also EWSA clients. We are in negotiations within the telecommunication companies and they are developing the needed technology for the service to be launched.”
As for the bank payment contract service, clients will be requested to have contracts with EWSA and the bank that enables them to be billed after a period agreed in the contract.
These contracts will vary depending on past level of consumption and efficiency of payment by the consumers.
These developments come at a time when the utility body sets to streamline its operations and costs by embracing the technology age, while still improving on the quality of services delivered.
EWSA has recently scrapped the monthly meter rent charges.
More than 15,000 customers are connected to the grid every year. The new mode of payment will target the 2.5 million mobile phone users in the country.
