The Anglo-Dutch supermajor said the fire hit the Rhineland Refinery in Cologne-Godorf at around 3 pm local time Thursday, sending thick plumes of dark smoke into the air.
Authorities got the fire under control using foam by about 4:15 pm, Shell said.
The problem started in a toluene tank and early tests “show no indication of the release of hazardous substances,” the company added, saying it also advised residents to close doors and windows.
“The refinery management sincerely regrets this incident,” Shell said.
