Kenya: Fire at Kengen power station causes blackout

Power transmission grid05 March 2014, Nairobi – A fire incident at Kengen’s power station in Garissa has caused a major power blackout in the area.

Kenneth Chege, Kenya Power Kenya Power Regional Manager for Mount Kenya South, said the early morning fire destroyed three power generation machines disrupting power to the whole of Garissa and its environs. He said the primary cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Chege said Kengen technicians are currently working to restore power at the earliest time possible. Garissa has an isolated power system (not connected to the national grid). A power line is being constructed between Mwingi and Garissa to connect it to the grid.
