Uganda’s Karuma power project brings mixed fortunes

Power Transmission19 March 2014, Kampala – Construction of the Karuma Hydro Power project in Kiryandongo district of Uganda has brought mixed fortunes for the locals.

While the increase in numbers of foreigners has pushed food prices up, many locals say they do not have sustainable jobs, and can’t easily find jobs at the Chinese construction site. One resident, Muhammad Oyet, said local materials such as bricks were being bought by middlemen at Shs 90 instead of the official Shs 200.

Another resident, Jennifer Atim, said a spike in demand and prices of land was escalating conflicts. However, many land owners affected by the project are happy with compensation of between Shs 10m and Shs 30m.
