The number of units exploring for oil increased by 14 from last week to 1487, up by 133 units from a year ago.
The count of rigs seeking gas was down by eight for a total of 318, off by 71 units from the same week in 2013.
The number working in the Gulf of Mexico was down by four to 49, up by six units from the year-ago figure.
Texas was the biggest gainer of the week, adding eight rigs for a total of 866.
That’s state’s Eagle Ford shale was up by four to 223, while the Permian basin added five rigs on 518. New Mexico added two for 88.
Oklahoma added five units for 188 as Alaska and West Virginia each added three for totals of 14 and 26 respectively.
Pennsylvania was the biggest loser, dropping five rigs for a total of 51 while California dropped by four for a total of 39.
