US rig count rises by nine

Tower Resources rig31 May 2014, News Wires – The number of rigs drilling for oil and gas in the US rose by nine this week to total 1866, according to data from Houston-based services giant Baker Hughes.

Oil rigs made up the bulk of the change, adding eight for a total of 1536. One gas-directed rig was added for 326.

Oklahoma made the biggest push on the week, adding eight rigs for a total of 199.

The Mississippian play added two for 77 and the Granite Wash in the Texas Panhandle added three for 66.

The Williston basin took the biggest hit, losing five rigs for 178. That matched the number of net rigs exiting North Dakota, which ended the week with a total of 169 drilling units.

The Permian basin was up three rigs for a total of 550, up 80 from a year ago and leading all basins by far.

Texas as a state added five rigs for 894. New Mexico lost one for 86.

The Eagle Ford was flat on 213.

The Marcellus was flat on 83 and the Haynesville lost a pair for 42.

The Utica play lost one rig for 40.

Wyoming gained a pair of rigs for 47. California was up one on 49. Alaska also gained one for 11.

Rigs working in the Gulf of Mexico stayed the same as last week on 58.

Canada gained 44 rigs for a total of 198.
