30 June 2014, Uyo – An estimated 600,000 barrels of crude oil might have been lost and property worth millions of naira destroyed following the fire outbreak at the weekend in one of the storage facilities operated by Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPNU), a subsidiary of American oil giant, ExxonMobil.
A source said although no life was lost, the fire incident didn’t extend outside MPN facility as the fire service department rushed in to prevent the fire from spreading and further damaging the facility.
“We received information that there was a fire outbreak in Mobil facility in QIT, Ibeno as a result of crude oil leak which caused about 600,000 barrels of crude oil to be wasted.
“The fire did not extend to the Ibeno community as it happened within the Mobil facility and the items destroyed were within the Mobil facility,” the source said.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, maintained that the items destroyed were within the Mobil facility and that the fire fighters department intervened immediately to prevent escalation.
It disclosed that the fire destroyed properties worth millions of naira, though no life was lost.
The Manager, Public and Government Affairs, Mr. Akaninyene Esiere, confirmed the incident, saying the fire was caused by the lightening strike and was safely extinguished before serious damage could be done.
According to him, the fire happened at the storage tank in QIT, adding that all personnel were accounted for and there was no injury.
