DPR meets with depot owners on safety, security

Petroleum products depotKunle Kalejaye 21 July 2014, Sweetcrude, Lagos – The Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, has hosted a one-day forum with product depot owners to deliberate on safety and security.

Mr. Oliver Okparaojiako, Head Downstream DPR, who represented the Director of Petroleum Resources, stated that the objective of the interactive session was to deliberate how to enhance security at oil installations, especially product depots, through engagement with depot owners.
He outlined the focus areas for engagement as how to, beef up the existing safety and security measures; secure the access points to the depots; improve safety and security measures within the depots; comply with the international Ship and Port Security Codes (ISPSC), and to employ new technology/ methods safety and security at the depots.
Mr. Okparaojiako counselled depot owners to re-appraise the existing security situation on their facilities and outline improvement areas for immediate implementation and assured that government will offer the necessary support.
He also advised on the need to employ qualified security professionals on the facilities and give adequate training, promising that the security session would be a continous exercise to complement the efforts the facility owners have been making through their respective associations.
Mr. Okparaojiako asked depot operators to always keep DPR abreast of their plans and come up with recommendations to tackle the security challenges around their facilities.
