Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, said this while identifying with Shape, one of the communities in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, which benefited from the solar power under the Operation Light-up Rural Nigeria, OLRN scheme.

He said the project is a true representation of the immediate and remarkable Transformation Agenda of the present administration.

The Light-up Rural Nigeria, is a renewable energy initiative project of the Federal Ministry of Power to provide affordable and reliable access to electricity by rural dwellers through solar powered systems.

The project has recorded a huge success as the two communities in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, namely; Durumi, Shape-Waru, celebrated one year uninterrupted power supply in their communities.

Nebo said the project is a true representation of the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration in the power sector, which is aimed at providing access to electricity to the rural communities that may not in the distant future have access because they are far flung from the grid.

The Minister was delighted to note that President Jonathan’s Reform Agenda in the Power Sector is to diversify Nigeria’s energy mix and provide access to electricity to a majority of Nigerians without easy access to the grid is on course, and has been very successful.

Nebo also solicited the assistance of prospective investors to come up with proposals of partnership with his ministry in order to extend and expand access to electricity by majority of Nigerians residing in rural areas, who currently are not connected to the grid.

The Minister said since these communities were electrified last year various types of small and medium scale enterprises have been spurred like pharmacy, welding, card retailing shops, and all kinds of artisan businesses, boutiques, barbing and hairdressing salons to mention but a few.

The Minister emphasized that these businesses were practically non-existent before the provision of the solar project in the community, but have now stamped their presence.

Nebo further revealed that his Ministry has been receiving favourable reports from the local schools on the level of improvement in the students’ academic standard as a result of the provision of electricity as the pupils now have electricity to read in the night.

He also revealed that Mr. President has directed them to go to every length and breadth of the country to preach the gospel – that all Nigerians would soon have access to uninterrupted power supply, stressing that the concern of Mr. President for rural access to power would radically transform their social and economic lives.

Speaking earlier, Senator Philip Aduda rejoiced with the communities in celebrating one year uninterrupted power supply and appealed to Federal Government and co-operative societies to come together in providing fund for projects like this.
