In Amenas terrorist Belmokhtar ‘not dead’

16 June 2015, News Wires – Mokhtar Belmokhtar, the terrorist accused of orchestrating the deadly attack on the In Amenas gas plant in Algeria, was not killed by US air strikes in Libya at the weekend, an Islamist group is reported to have claimed.

The Algerian national, known variously as The Uncatchable and The One-Eyed, was said by Libya’s recognised government to have perished following the assaults in Ajdabiya, eastern Libya.

However, a group called Ansar al-Sharia has listed seven people killed in those strikes, but did not include Belmokhtar’s name, according to Reuters.

“While we eulogise these heroes… we deny the killing of any other personalities besides those whom we have named who are sons of this land [Libya],” Reuters quoted the group as saying on its Twitter account.

Belmokhtar’s alleged death – not the first time he has been reported as killed – was not independently verified and, while US authorities confirmed the air strikes and that the wanted jihadist was their target, they never confirmed that he had been killed.

The one-time commander of al-Qaeda’s North African operations was previously charged by the US over the January 2013 attack on In Amenas, which left dozens of foreign and Algerian workers and 29 militants dead.

In March 2013, less than two months after the assault, Belmokhtar was reported to have been killed in Mali when Chadian forces attacked and destroyed a jihadist base.
