Labour directs workers to shut power supply to Rivers, others

18 August 2015, Lagos—The leadership of the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, has directed workers to shut down power supply to four states of Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom, from today over alleged unfair labour practice especially, the sack and reduction of salaries of workers perceived as union activists by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, PHEDC.

Energy Crisis Threatens the Western Power GridsDirecting that both the transmission and distributing companies should not render services to PHEDC, NUEE instructed members to clamp down on PHEDC and picket its offices in the four state from today till further notice, saying “The era of abuse of workers’ rights is over.”

The union had earlier issued a 14-day ultimatum to the management of PHEDC which expired last week.

In the ultimatum by Mr. Akon, Senior Assistant General Secretary of the union on behalf of General Secretary, the union accused the management of among others of arbitrary dismissal of employees and, or termination of their appointments without any cogent reason(s).
