Delta govt wades into Itsekiri youths, Chevron dispute

01 October 2015, Lagos – Delta State Government, has wadded into the dispute between Itsekiri youths on the aegis of Itsekiri Interest Initiative, III, and Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, forcing the youths to relax the three weeks ultimatum to CNL.

ChevronThe youths had two weeks ago handed down the ultimatum to the company over what they described as gross negligence of the Ugborode people.

Speaking after a closed door meeting with the Special Adviser to the State Governor on Niger Delta Affairs, Prince Kelly Penawou, Chairman of the group, Austin Leleji, alleged that Chevron had messed up their community.

Leleji said the Ugborode community had nothing to show for the oil exploration activities in the area.

While wondering whether CNL was a blessing or a curse to the community, he claimed the oil company was reneging on the agreement it entered with the community.

He said government had pleaded with them to hold on till the end of October 2015, to address the issues raised with the management of Chevron.

On his part, Penawou thanked the group for honouring the invitation and listening to government, adding that government would also invite CNL with a view to resolving the issues.
