NUPENG urges govt to diversify economy

12 November 2015, Owerri  – Due to the dwindling prizes of oil on the international market, the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has urged the federal government to as a matter of urgency look inward by diversifying the nation’s economy through the promotion of agriculture, solid minerals and tourism.

In a welcome address delivered at the 2015 NUPENG National Education Seminar in Owerri, the National President, Comrade Igwe Achese, lamented the adverse effect the oil gloom in the world had caused the nation’s economy, which had reduced the revenue accruing to the nation by 50 percent.

According to him, it is against this background that the nation must now look inward by diversifying the economy. “We must not rely on oil alone but look at other areas that will bring the needed revenue for infrastructural development,” Achese said.
