Kunle Kalejaye 30 March 2016, Sweetcrude, Lagos – The Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, has ordered immediate replacement by the international oil companies, IOCs, of all aged pipelines in their system.
Mr. Mordecai Danteni Baba Ladan,, Director, DPR
Issuing the instruction in Lagos, the Director of the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, Mr. Modecai Ladan, maintained that the IOCs’ pipelines system were over 20 years old and urgently needed to be replaced.
He wondered why adequate measures have not been taken by the IOCs to maintained the system even when most of the IOCs have robust pipeline maintenance systems on ground, which, according to him, “have been regrettably ignored”.
Mr. Ladan noted that the inability of IOCs to maintain their pipelines was partly responsible for the shut down of petroleum distribution in the country.
Urging pipeline owners to embark on continuous research to discover state-of-the-art methods of maintaining pipelines, the DPR boss said what oil companies and communities were losing to pipeline vandalism was enough to solve the problem.
According to him, vandalism was a subject that had to do with the country’s socio-political environment.
“If people are adequately okay, they don’t have any business destroying something that will benefit them.
“These issues have being on ground with us and are affecting the economy. Pipelines vandalism causes environmental damages, killing of the eco-system, emergence of illegal refineries, pollution of the environment and air space, low quality product being sold in the street and the damage they do to our cars and the cost of putting those things back in shape.
“Government should take social responsibilities of the environment with our pipelines,” he said.
