NUPENG tasks govt on proposed Pipelines Protection Agency

10 May 2016, Warri – Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has called on the Federal Government to hasten the establishment of the proposed Pipelines Protection Agency, PPA, that will be equipped with modern technology to stem the tide of pipeline vandalism.

The union, which stated this while condemning the recent attack on Chevron Valve Platform in Abiteye, Warri North Local Government Area in Delta State by militants, noted that the effects of such criminal acts on the ecosystem through the destruction of aquaculture, farmlands, water, and river pollution arising from the spillage, was very huge.

NUPENG, in a statement by its president, Igwe Achese, contended that the attack on Chevron Valve Platform by suspected militants was not in good taste and must not be allowed to continue, urging the suspected militants to sheathe their sword and stop the destruction of oil installations and pipelines in the country.

According to the statement, “We call on those responsible to embrace peace. We equally implore the Federal Government to intensify effort at setting up the proposed Pipelines Protection Agency as said by the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbanjo, that will be equipped with modern technology to stem the tide of vandalism.“We urge the militants to stop the dastardly act as it affects the ecosystem through the destruction of aquaculture, farmlands, water, and river pollution arising from the spillage. Militants should to desist from the act as it draws the economy back and affects the climate and lives of the citizens of the host community.

“We want to use this medium to call on those responsible to embrace peace and not embark on further threats or damage to pipelines. We equally implore the Federal government to intensify effort at setting up the proposed pipelines protection Agency as said by the Vice-President, Yemi Osinbanjo that will be equipped with modern day technology to stem the tide of vandalism.

”The union added by insisting that “the security agencies must redouble their efforts 24/7 with equipment installed with night visions to put a stop to such surprise attacks on oil installations and pipelines.”
