10 July 2016, Sweetcrude, Abuja – A former Minister of Mines, Power and Petroleum, Alhaji Shettima Ali-Monguno (CFR) is dead. He died Friday in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, at the age of 90.

The state government said the deceased was buried on Saturday in Maiduguri according to Muslim rites after a funeral prayer at his residence.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Jidda Shuwa, who announced this, noted in a statement: “It is with a deep sense of loss and profound sadness that we announce, on behalf of His Excellency the Executive Governor of Borno State and the Borno State Government, the passage of our father and distinguished Statesman, Alhaji (Dr.) Shettima Ali Monguno.”

Shuwa prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased and that may Allah give his family and the entire people of Borno the fortitude to bear the loss.

Born in 1926 in Monguno, Borno State, the late Monguno attended Monguno Primary School, Teacher’s College Bauchi and Katsina, College of Arts, Science and Technology Zaria, Moray House College of Education and the University of Edinburgh.

He was a member of parliament in 1959, education secretary and councillor for education, works and social welfare Borno, local Government, 1959-65, Federal Minister for Air Force and internal affair, 1965-66, federal commissioner for trade and industries, 1967-71 and minister mines and power, petroleum and energy, 1972-75.

Shettima Ali Monguno was also President, OPEC from 1972 to 1973.

He was Presidential Candidate during the Option A4 Elections in the early 1990s in Nigeria.

He was the leader of Nigerian delegation to UNCAD II New Delhi in 1968 and member Nigerian delegation to United Nations for over 10 years.

He received keys to the cities of New York, Louisville, Kentucky, USA; Quito, Ecuador and Lima, Peru.
