13 January 2019, Sweetcrude, Lagos — Armed pirates on Monday, attacked two tanker vessels off the coast of Lagos, according to data provided by International Maritime Bureau, IMB, Piracy Reporting Centre.
Both attacks occurred only hours apart shortly after midnight near Lagos.
The first incident saw about five armed robbers in a small skiff approach an unnamed anchored product tanker. The robbers reportedly threw two ropes attached with hooks onto the tanker’s railing.
Duty crew on routine rounds heard voices near the bow and noticed the hooks and the skiff. The alarm was raised and non-essential crew members were mustered in the citadel.
As MSC negotiate release of the kidnapped crew
Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) said it is setting up a team to negotiate with the pirates who kidnapped six Russian sailors from one if its containerships, the MSC Mandy, off the coast of Cotonou, Benin Republic, on January 2.
“We have engaged security experts and are creating a team for contacting the pirates. The team will include lawyers, negotiators, and employees of a company that deals with security. We hope to establish the first contact today,” MSC spokesman, Rafaele Porzio, said on Wednesday.
The company, according to him, had already recruited experts who had provided recommendations on a plan to rescue the abducted seamen.
