“This is not fair. The huge sum of money used to deploy military houseboats, gunships and fighter jets is enough to fund the Nigerian Maritime University and other development projects in the region that will give a sense of relief and belonging to the people as part of the Nigerian project.”
But ex-militants and local chieftains say that since those “town hall” discussions, little has been done – the government has not followed up on issues raised, is stalling on key demands and has not even appointed a full-time negotiating team.
He said, “Our duty is to ensure that there is constant peace in the region. The people in the region also have to be included in the peace drive. But we are starting with 200 ex-agitators. The sports initiative is one of the efforts our programme is making to maintain peace in the region. The other efforts are quick impact projects.”
He explained that under the plan that is being developed, communities would come together working with their respective state governments, the Federal Government and private sector operators to work out a template for the establishment of modular refineries in the communities.
Osinbajo specifically directed that the list of all contractors who did not comply with the directive within the stipulated period be compiled and submitted to the Ministry of Justice and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for investigation and prosecution.
