He emphasised that “energy theft is also a serious setback and we are planning to embark on mass literacy campaigns and advocacy to educate the public on the issue”.
He noted that contrary to the speculation fueled by mischief makers, distribution companies are facing severe liquidity constraints as they are charging far below cost prices in the delivery of electricity to its customers.
The Agency made claims that the distribution company was rolling out smart meters that did not undergo the routine test to check their quality and ascertain their suitability in the country.
He said that the meters were being installed to minimise electricity theft and ensure that electricity consumed was paid for.
“NERC agreed that the N50,000 penalty was not enough and promised to look into the matter and report back in the coming week,” the document stated.
He said that the company would suspend the installation of the meters based on NEMSA’s directive which had created doubts in the minds of customers.
The BPE boss noted that gas pricing was a major issue in the electricity distribution chain, as most of the generating plants in the country were gas fired and the price of gas indexed on the U.S. dollar while collection was in Naira, a the situation that has created a gap in liquidity due to the exchange rate.
