The new test station would further assist the agency in carrying out this function effectively, especially with the recently proposed third party metering draft by the Nigerian Electricity Regualatory Commission (NERC).
“Our findings reveal that of the 366 deaths recorded in 2017 86.8 per cent of the victims were electricity consumers, while the remaining 13.2 per cent were that of staffs of the electricity companies in the industry, this high incidence of deaths is alarming and unacceptable.”
The criteria used for the classification ranges from number of cases of fatality, major injures, network sanitation and safety operations.
From the statistics, 190 people were victims of 146 electrical accidents throughout the whole year in 2017 in which 113 people died in 95 accidents while 77 others sustained injuries in another 51 accidents.
According to him, this situation has hampered the industry from meeting the statutory obligations of providing cheap, clean and efficient source of energy to the electrical loads, and as a result of this, national development has been seriously slowed down.
Ewesor said, “The exercise will identify high risk defective networks that pose serious threat and danger to operators’ operational staff and the general public for immediate attention and correction/rectification by respective Discos and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
The pilot of the network cleanup, which commenced in Gishiri Village of Abuja, started with the removal and replacement of substandard electrical poles with standard concrete ones.
The Managing Director of NEMSA, Mr. Peter Ewesor, said that the agency had visited the house where the fire incident happened to carry out proper investigation.
The report also stated that there had been 67 accidents with fatalities so far, while there were 37 accidents with only injuries adding that 59 persons were injured in the process.
