24 November 2015, Abuja – Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, Mr. Babatunde Fowler has said that over 200 companies in the oil and gas sector have not filed their returns for 2015 to the Federal Government.
He stated this while making a presentation at a forum organised by PriceWaterhouseCooper, PwC, in Lagos, yesterday, on tax compliance in Nigeria.
He said the oil and gas firms were part of thousands of businesses captured in FIRS’ book but have not been filing returns to the revenue agency.
This is even as he disclosed that the agency was targeting admitting about five million more Nigerians and about 500, 000 businesses into the tax net in the first quarter of 2016.
He said: “Over 200 oil and gas companies have not filed returns for 2015 and we have written letters to them. We have also written over a thousand letters to non-compliant tax payers. These are tax payers that are on our books but in 2015 have not remitted any Value Added Tax, VAT. These payments are payments that are shared between the three tiers of government.”
