18 June 2013, Lagos – As the Federal Government pursues the privatisation programme for the 10 new power stations being built under the National Integrated Power Project, NIPP, it has also unveiled the timelines for the completion of the power stations that are yet to be completed.
The time-table for the completion of the power projects showed that four of the 10 power stations have already been completed with all their units on the national grid; while six power plants are still under construction.
One of the plants under construction, Alaoji Power Plant at Aba in Abia State has four gas turbines – General Electric, GE, Frame 9E gas turbines and two steam turbines, with a combined capacity of 1,131.4megawatts.
But 706mw generation capacity is anticipated by the date of the sale of the power station.
The plant, which is being built by Rockson Engineering Limited, will be completed by May 2014, when the steam turbines will be on grid, according to the time-table.
However, the gas turbines will be completed by December 2013 and put on the national grid.
The 451megawatt capacity Ihovbor Power Plant in Edo State, which is being constructed by Marubeni Engineering West Africa Limited has four gas turbines and will be completed by August 2013, according to the time table.
The time table also showed that the 562mw capacity Calabar Power Station, which is also being constructed by Marubeni Engineering West Africa Limited, has five gas engines and will be completed by May 2014.
The Calabar power plant is an open cycle gas turbine plant built to accommodate conversion to Combined Cycle Gas Turbine, CCGT, configuration in the future.
The 338mw-capacity Egbema Power Station, near Owerri in Imo State, which is also being constructed by Rockson Engineering Limited, will be completed in December 2013, according to the time table.
The time-table also indicates that all the units in the 253.8mw-capacity Gbarain Ubie Power Plant, near Yenegoa in Bayelsa State, will be put on the grid in November 2013.
Egbema has three gas turbines; while Gbarain has two gas turbines and both are open cycle gas turbine plants designed to accommodate future conversion to Combined Cycle Gas Turbine.
