Port Harcourt — The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice-Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, has called on traditional rulers in the state to intensify efforts in protecting public infrastructure within their domains. He emphasized their pivotal role as custodians of peace and stability, urging proactive measures against theft and vandalism of government properties.
Vice-Admiral Ibas made the appeal today while declaring open the 121st and 122nd Combined Quarterly General Meeting of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers in Port Harcourt. Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Lucky Worika, the Administrator stressed that traditional institutions remain the bedrock of societal harmony and must lead the charge in safeguarding critical assets.
A Call to Action
In his address, the Administrator reminded the monarchs of their indispensable role in maintaining order, referencing his earlier engagement with them upon assuming office.
“In our African tradition, we say when the roots of a tree begin to decay, it spreads death to the branches,” he stated. “This proverb reminds us of the foundational role traditional institutions play in the life of our communities. You, our revered traditional rulers, are the roots—custodians of culture, guardians of heritage, and stabilizers of society.”
He urged them to take deliberate steps in securing government facilities, warning that his administration would not shield any traditional ruler found complicit in breaches of peace.
Unity Against Challenges
Acknowledging the multifaceted challenges facing communities—ranging from security threats to economic pressures—the Administrator called for collective action.
“We live in times where our communities face myriad complex and interrelated challenges—security, social, economic, cultural, etc. But as our ancestors taught us, rain does not fall on one roof alone. We must rise together, support one another, and speak with one voice for the good of our people,” he declared.
He reassured the traditional rulers of his administration’s commitment to collaboration, welcoming their ideas to foster development in Rivers State.
Royal Appreciation
In response, the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, His Majesty Eze Chike Amadi Worlu-Wodo, Eze Oha Apara (IV) of Apara Kingdom, expressed gratitude to the Administrator for his presence and relentless efforts toward peace and progress in the state.
The meeting, attended by monarchs from across Rivers State, reinforced the need for strengthened partnerships between the government and traditional institutions in ensuring security and sustainable development.
The resolutions from the meeting are expected to shape community-led security initiatives, with traditional rulers taking a more active role in protecting public assets and fostering grassroots stability.
