Port Harcourt — Nigeria was on Tuesday plunged again into darkness as the national grid has collapsed for the tenth time this year, leaving millions of Nigerians without electricity.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN confirmed the partial disturbance occurred at 1:52 pm on Tuesday.
According to TCN, the collapse was triggered by multiple line and generator trippings, causing grid instability, however, the National Control Centre reported that part of the grid remained operational.
TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said engineers are working to quickly restore bulk power supply to affected states, saying that Abuja had its power restored at 2:49 pm, with gradual restoration ongoing for other parts of the country.
TCN in a statement apologized for the inconvenience, assuring that they’re working diligently to resolve the issue.
The statement reads, “The Transmission Company of Nigeria states that the national grid experienced a partial disturbance at about 1;52 pm today, 5th November 2024.
“This followed a series of lines and generators trippings that caused instability of the grid and, consequently, the partial disturbance of the system. The data from the National Control Centre (NCC) revealed that a part of the grid was not affected by the bulk power disruption.
“TCN engineers are already working to quickly restore bulk power supply to the states affected by the partial disturbance. Presently, bulk power supply has been restored to Abuja, at 2.49pm, and we are gradually restoring to other parts of the country.”
This latest collapse marks the tenth time the national grid has failed in 2024, as the country witnessed four grid collapse in October, sparking concerns over the country’s power infrastructure.
“The frequent grid collapses undermine economic growth and citizens’ well-being,” said energy expert, Dr Joseph Obele.
