13 February 2015, News Wires – The bodies of five workers killed by an explosion this week on board a floating production, storage and offloading unit working for Petrobras off Brazil have been recovered and brought to shore.
The nationalities of those killed on board the BW Offshore-owned Cidade de Sao Mateus and the four who remain missing have also been revealed.
The blast ripped through the FPSO on Wednesday as it was operating for state-owned Petrobras on the Camarupim and Camarupim Norte fields in the Espirito Santo basin about 120 kilometres off Brazil.
The death toll swiftly rose from three to five after two of the initial six missing people were confirmed dead. Four of the 74 personnel who were on board at the time of the explosion remaining missing, with state regulator ANP saying on Thursday 25 were injured.
A BW spokesperson told Upstream on Friday that the bodies of all five confirmed dead have been taken ashore. Those confirmed dead include four Brazilians and one Indian.
The four who remain missing are all Brazilians.
BW said on Friday that seven injured personnel remain in hospital.
A limited team of superintendents went on board the floater with one or all of them returning to shore yesterday evening. BW plans to send a team to the unit on Friday to assess if it is safe to send a larger team on board to continue the search and rescue operation.
The owner confirmed that the floater’s hull remains intact. The vessel, however, remains shut in.
