03 May 2018, Sweetcrude, Houston, Texas — Analysis of the global planned propylene capacity shows that China has the highest planned capacity additions with 8.77 million tonnes per year (mtpa) between 2018 and 2022, followed by the US and Iran with 2.39 mtpa and 2.20 mtpa, respectively, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.
China will account for 40.4 percent of the total global planned propylene capacity additions in 2022. The country has 19 planned propylene plants. Among these, Fujian Meide Petrochemical Fuzhou Propylene Plant, Oriental Energy Ningbo Propylene Plant 2, and Oriental Energy Ningbo Propylene Plant 3 lead in terms of capacity, each with 0.66 mtpa.
The US will have 11.0 percent share in the global planned propylene capacity additions in 2022 and has five planned propylene plants. The top planned plant in terms of capacity is Enterprise Products Partners Mont Belvieu Propylene Plant with 0.75 mtpa, followed by Formosa Plastics Group St. James Parish Propylene Plant with a capacity of 0.60 mtpa and Formosa Plastics Corporation Point Comfort Propylene Plant 2 with a capacity of 0.55 mtpa.
Iran is expected to contribute approximately10.1 percent to the total global planned propylene capacity additions in 2022. Iran has eight planned propylene plants. Salman-e-Farsi Petrochemical Company Mahshahr Propylene Plant leads with a capacity of 0.50 mtpa, followed by The National Petrochemical Company Mahshahr Propylene Plant and Mehr Petrochemical Company Assaluyeh Propylene Plant, each with a capacity of 0.45 mtpa.
Anna Belova, Senior Oil & Gas Analyst at GlobalData, comments, “Malaysia will have 8.1 percent share in the global planned propylene capacity additions in 2022. PETRONAS Pengerang Propylene Plant is the only planned plant in Malaysia with a capacity of 1.75 mtpa.”
Egypt is expected to contribute about 6.2 percent to the total global planned propylene capacity additions in 2022 and has two planned propylene plants. Tahrir Petrochemicals Company Ain Sokhna Propylene Plant leads with a capacity of 0.88 mtpa, followed by ECHEM Boubyan Petrochemicals JV Alexandria Propylene Plant with a capacity of 0.47 mtpa.
Russia, Indonesia, Belgium, India and Canada together are expected to have propylene capacity additions of 3.86 mtpa or around 17.8 percent of the total global planned propylene capacity additions in 2022.
