Port Harcourt — Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has described the net-zero target proposed by the United Nations for 2050, and in the case of Nigeria and other developing countries 2060, as a welcome development which all countries must support.
Osinbajo explained that while the entire world was facing a climate crisis, African countries were experiencing both a climate crisis and a challenge of extreme poverty, including energy poverty.
The Vice President on his verified Facebook handle, stated that addressing energy poverty involves engaging in discussions to push forward Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan.
According to him, these were part of his speech on Africa and Climate Justice yesterday at the Queens University in Kingston, during his 3-day visit to Canada.
“Climate change is possibly the most significant global existential threat today.
“On the path to stemming its tide and cutting greenhouse gas emissions to as close as zero as possible, the net-zero target proposed by the United Nations for 2050, and in the case of Nigeria, 2060 is a welcome development that all countries must support.
“Unfortunately, the cost of achieving this target is not in proportion with the price that most African countries, including Nigeria, can afford to pay.
“While the entire world is facing a climate crisis, African countries are experiencing both a climate crisis and a challenge of extreme poverty, and we believe that energy poverty is at the center of this.”
