12 November 2013, Abuja — The Akwa Ibom State Government has set up a committee to discuss possible compensation to communities for oil spills.
The committee comprises management staff of ExxonMobil and leaders of the host communities in Eket Federal Constituency.
This follows calls by host communities insisting that the oil firm to pay compensation for oil spills in addition to investments it had previously volunteered to enhance development in the communities.
Governor Godswill Akpabio, announced the committee.
“We have already set up a committee to meet and discuss between the host communities and ExxonMobil with a view to proffering solutions to the payment of the oil spill compensation,” he said after the Executive Vice Chairman of ExxonMobil, Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu and his team paid him a courtesy visit in Uyo.
Kachikwu said his company was committed to giving back to host communities.
“ExxonMobil would continue to respect corporate citizenship in relation to Akwa Ibom State,” he said.
The official thanked the Governor for his support and for creating a conducive business environment for the company.
He also thanked him for the hospitality and support given to ExxonMobil by the state and the host communities for their understanding.
Kachikwu applauded the Governor for his developmental strides in the state and for rendering selfless sacrifice to the country, which he said would leave lasting imprints after his tenure of office.
