Port Harcourt — The Civil Society Coalition on Environmental Action has charged the Rivers State government to continue in the clampdown of illegal refineries across the state.
Leader of the Coalition, Amadi Boma, explained that illegal refineries, popularly known as Kpofire can be eliminated through job creation.
Boma speaking in Port Harcourt, lamented that hydrocarbon soot was still ravaging Rivers State.
“The state and local government should continue to clamp down on the activities of illegal refiners as their activities continue to constitute grave danger to the state.
“Security operatives are encouraged to work with community members to identify the location of these illegal refineries and safely dispose off such products.”
Also, a member of the coalition, Mr Henry Eferebo, said the campaign was imperative in order to ensure a sustainable and healthy environment for residents.
“This campaign is to ensure there is a sustainable approach, like the Rivers State House of Assembly who has started enacting plans to pass the soot law.
“Though anything that has to do with crude oil and gas is in the exclusive list, but the Assembly, because the land belongs to the state and so this thing done on land triggers the state to legislate on the issue of kpo fire.”
