26 August 2013, Asaba – As part of its efforts to achieve the Delta Beyond Oil Initiative, Delta State Government has established production centres for bio-gas and concrete electric poles at Sapele and Ogor Technical Colleges, respectively at a cost of N16.4billion.
The state commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare who disclosed this to newsmen in an interview, said that test-run of the production of bio-gas from water hyacinth has already commenced at the Sapele Technical College.
He noted that the critical role of science and technical education in the industrial development of any nation cannot be overlooked as it holds the key to providing the solution to the nation’s unemployment problem.
He said that the existing six technical colleges in the state will cease to operate the junior secondary level with effect from 2013/2014 academic year, adding that only students who have completed the junior secondary education at the regulator secondary school and desire to acquire vocational skills and trades would be admitted.
Prof. Mouboghare disclosed plans by the state government to establish three new technical colleges in anticipation of increase in enrolment; a process that will enhance access to technical education.
The commissioner said that the ministry intends to reposition the technical colleges in the state to become more effective and as instrument for raising a generation of technically inclined citizens that will not be dependent on white collar jobs after graduation.
