17 March 2016, Uyo – Hundreds of youths from Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom Thursday made good their threat by disrupting activities at ExxonMobil facilities located in Eket.
THISDAY gathered that youths took their demonstration to Mobil airstrips and housing estate facilities of the oil major,
The gates at the ExxonMobil airstrips were barricaded with plantain suckers and traditional injections.
Workers of the oil giants were seen loitering around the gates both at airstrip and Mobil housing estate as they could not get entry into the facilities.
Placards carried by the youths read “ExxonMobil release our Money”, “Regina Udobong please our money”, “ExxonMobil enough is enough”, “Ibeno, Esit Eket and Onna have been paid why Eket?, “We will not leave until our money is paid’’ among others.
The Youths leader of Eket, Mr Godwin Nduaesa, said the youths were aggrieved because of the nonpayment of oil spill palliative meant for Eket since 2011.
“The blocking of Mobil has become necessary because the three core oil communities of Ibeno, Onna and Esit Eket have since 2015 being paid leaving out Eket without explanation.
“The youths are going to remain here until the money is released for Eket community,’’ Nduaesa said.
