22 April 2015, News Wires – ExxonMobil has been fined more than $5 million over a 2013 pipeline rupture that led to a heavy crude oil spill in an Arkansas neighbourhood.
The settlement with the US Department of Justice and the Environmental Protection Agency “holds ExxonMobil accountable for this very serious oil spill and its disastrous impact” on the Northwoods neighbourhood in Mayflower, the agencies said.
An estimated 3190 barrels of heavy Canadian crude being transported from Illinois to Texas was spilled following the incident in March 2013 that led to some homes being evacuated.
As part of the settlement agreed on Wednesday, ExxonMobil will pay $3.19 million in federal civil penalties and $1 million in state civil penalties. It will also pay $600,000 for a project to improve water quality at Lake Conway and stump up the Arkansas Attorney General’s office litigation fees of $280,000.
ExxonMobil had stood accused of violating the Clean Water Act and state environmental laws.
