11 November 2012, Sweetcrude, Eket – Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited has recorded another oil spill at its Qua Iboe oil field.
Community dwellers describe the spill as the worst since the firm commenced operations over 40 years ago.
A community dweller who spoke with us at the terminal said the spill occurred at the Idoho oil platform.
“We have a report from Mobil that they had a spill at their field and we have dispatched our officers to the spill location to access the impact,” an official of the National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA, disclosed.
“They estimate that the spilled volume is between 50 and 100 barrels but that is not a reliable estimate as the investigation would determine the quantity of oil discharged.”
Twice last August on the 13th and 23rd, two separate spills occurred within the Qua Iboe oil fields operated by Mobil.
Mr. Paul Arinze, General Manager, Public and Government Affairs, Mobil, disclosed in a statement that investigation is underway.
“Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPN), operator of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC/MPN) Joint Venture, confirms that on November 9 an oil release occurred offshore Akwa Ibom State.
