10 March 2015, Lagos – Residents of Festac town under the aegis of Festival Town Residents Association, FTRA, last week, kicked against the poor power supply and outrageous billing being suffered in the community.
The President of the Association, Mr Jola Ogunlusi, said the protest became imperative after series of complaints to the district office without any solution; and were therefore constrained to make their feelings known to the company headquarters.
Ogunlusi, said the mission of the Association to Marina was to submit a protest letter as regards the non-availability of the already paid for prepaid meter, and outrageous billing in Festac town in the face of epileptic power supply.
According to him, “Since 2006, when 8,300 houses were given free prepaid meters, other houses have remained under the bondage of estimated billing which has transcended to crazy billing.
‘’We therefore demand unequivocally the supply of prepaid meter to all houses in the five communities in Festac Town, and also putting an end to the exorbitant charges which are not based on meter reading,” he stated.
He also complained that a resident was given a bill of N4000 in September 2014, but suddenly received a bill of N11,000 in December and N40,000 in January 2015.
Specifically, they demanded to know the basis for the outrageous billings, adding that there was neither addition of appliances nor occupants in the flat.
The President argued that officials from EKEDC have not been reading the meters, and this is why the billings were based on unreasonable estimations.
He called for the supply of more transformers to areas experiencing over loading and continuous load shedding in the community.
Continuing, he said, ‘’The issue of coded bills should be looked into and all forms of disconnection of electricity to consumers who had not been able to pay under coded bills should stop, and we demand that fixed charges should be abolished immediately.”
Ogunlusi said that the association would continue to cooperate with the EKEDC as long as all their demands are met.
Responding, the General Manager, Public Affairs Division, EKEDC, Mr Godwin Idemudia, appealed to the association, saying that the management is aware of the entire problems in their communities, and promised to resolve them amicably.
He also commended the union for the mature way it made its demands, adding that the management of EKEDC would meet with all the electricity consumers in the Festac business Unit to resolve all outstanding issues in due course.
