25 May 2015, News Wires – A fire broke out aboard a small oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, about 32 kilometers off the coast of Louisiana, but was extinguished early on Saturday.
A fire broke out aboard a small oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, about 32 kilometers off the coast of Louisiana, but was extinguished early on Saturday.
Repair crews boarded after the fire was extinguished to begin clean up of the platform owned by privately-held Houston-based company Texas Petroleum Investment.
A sheen was seen on the surface of the water stretching more than a mile from the platform, Reuters reported.
All 28 crew members were safely evacuated from the platform after the fire broke out on Friday.
The platform can store up to 4000 barrels of crude, but only held between 100 and 130 barrels at the time of the fire, the company and Coast Guard said.
The platform, in Breton Sound Block 21, is in state waters overseen by the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources.
Texas Petroleum Investment has operations along the Gulf coast of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The company was founded in 1989 and operates more than 2000 producing wells.
