23 October 2018, Sweetcrude, Lagos — Uni-Trident Group has commended the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, over the removal of abandoned wrecks, vessels and clean-up of waterways for easy and safe navigation for operators in the maritime industry.
The Group Managing Director of Uni-Trident Group, Prince Chukwuma Obiorah gave the commendation while speaking at the unveiling of some ship demolition equipment valued at N2.5billion at his company’s new ultra-modern shipyard/Jetty, Iwofe, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, Rivers State
He said that NIMASA’s intervention in the removal of thousands of abandoned and wrecked vessels that littered the Nigerian waterways has averted dangers that would have resulted in accidents and caused harm to the environment.
Uni-Trident Group is a leading indigenous maritime company that provides marine services that support the logistics industry, and it is also a major player in the steel recycling industry.
He said: “We have been in the Nigerian maritime industry for some time now, and we can attest to the fact that the coming of the Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, for these two years indicates real positive change based on steps taken in the maritime sub-sector, which are unprecedented.
“One area that the agency led by the Director-General has focused on is identifying the dangers posed by the presence of thousands of abandoned ships along the Nigerian waterways, which also have a lot of negative environmental implication for the country.”
He further stated that the company spent N2.5 billion to purchase the new equipment installed. The equipment would boost and increase the facility’s capacity to dismantle and scrap three shipping vessels at the same time.
He also maintained that all the companies constituting the Group adheres strictly to best international standard practices because they place a high value on the protection of the Nigerian environment and ecosystem.

The firm according to Mr. Malcolm Amachree, Managing Director of Goldenvale, is interested working with NIMASA and pledged to adopt innovative and technologically driven methods to quicken the removal of derelict and abandoned ships dotting the Nigerian waterways.
