01 April 2015, News Wires – Pemex has confirmed that four workers died and 16 were injured, at least two critically, in a fire that broke out early on Wednesday at the Abkatun Alpha platform in the Bay of Campeche.
The Mexican state-led company said about 300 workers from the shallow-water platform have been evacuated and eight boats are on scene to help.
“Sadly we confirm the deaths of four workers in the accident that occurred today,” Pemex said in a statement Wednesday.
The injured, which are both from Pemex and the Cotemar marine contractor, have been brought to a Pemex hospital in Ciudad del Carmen.
Two contractors were listed as in critical condition, one in an intensive care unit on life support and another was in surgery, according to a list from the hospital shared on social media.
A third worker was listed as being in critical but stable condition, while ten more were listed as in “delicate” but stable condition.
The Sensor Informativo news source also reported and showed photos that part of the platform had collapsed.
Photos widely shared on social media showed an intense blaze shooting flames into the air and vessels fighting the fire.
